Our position on open-weights models

Dario Amodei responds to reports that US officials may ban American companies from using Chinese open-weights models, stating flatly that Anthropic has never advocated such a ban and that open-weights models without dangerous capabilities are a public good. His actual concern is authoritarian governments training more powerful models than the US — open or closed, used domestically or not, is beside the point.

A missing underscore sent an innocent man to prison for 18 months

Police investigating a 2018 child-luring case subpoenaed Kik for the username "fus_ro_dah" when the messages actually came from "fus__ro_dah" — one extra underscore. The one-character error identified a Nova Scotia man who was arrested despite no evidence on his devices, convicted, and served a full 18-month term; the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal has now overturned the conviction and called him factually innocent.
