Why didn’t you cover XYZ?
This is a common question for journalists, including at CT. A buzzy news story goes around, perhaps with some connection to Christianity, and our readers wonder—fairly!—why we don’t have the story when other outlets do.
In my experience, readers often guess that such a coverage gap is a deliberate, maybe even ideological choice. And sometimes, that can be true.
But usually the explanation is much more mundane: The right writer was sick or on vacation or unexpectedly without childcare, and by the time she got back, the news cycle had passed. Or we had print magazine deadlines to meet, and the printer doesn’t wait. Or there was an in-person event, like our annual staff meeting, that had a bunch of us tied up at once.
CT’s editorial team is pretty small, so even a few staffers being busy with other projects can lead to us missing XYZ while larger national outlets cover it. Of course, we always want to know what interests CT members, and we welcome letters to cteditor@christianitytoday.com saying what kinds of stories you’d like to see us cover more.
