Three Lean-verified blowup results. One month of work. One four-page statement that spends a page on the mathematics and three on what happened afterward. On Monday Tristan Buckmaster published finite-time blowup with smooth forcing for 3D Euler, Boussinesq, and incompressible porous media, joint with Levent Alpöge, and then set out, as plainly as he could, how OpenAI came to be sitting on a competing Navier-Stokes result within days of hearing about theirs.
Strip out the grievance and the timeline says one thing. The proof was never the scarce part. The route was.
Buckmaster is explicit about where the idea came from. Diego Córdoba and Luis Martínez-Zoroa spent years building blowups with rough forcing; he and Alpöge took that program and, with a great deal of LLM help, pushed it to smooth forcing and to Euler. The first LLM-generated proof landed on August 15. Lean verified it on August 22. He says the Euler write-up can only be described as AI slop, and apologizes for it. He also says Martínez-Zoroa deserves a Fields Medal. That is a man crediting the direction, not the derivation.
Then the direction leaked. A rumor reached Courant, via an analyst in the UK, that a major open problem had fallen. Alpöge got tips that word of their progress had reached OpenAI. Buckmaster wrote to a mathematician there on September 3, was pressed to meet, and by Sunday was on two calls with Sébastien Bubeck being told an internal model had proved forced blowup for Navier-Stokes, about 100 pages, from a prompt that was just the problem statement with very little human input.

Over the course of the call, by his account, the story changed. An entire team had been working on it. The unforced problem had been tried first. The model had been warmed up on easier problems, including Euler. The prompt he was shown had itself been written by prompting Codex. The compute was, in his phrase, insane. And the first prompt had gone out in the past few days, after information about their work reached OpenAI.
Read that as a systems story rather than a scandal and the shape is clear. A lab with enough compute can re-derive a hundred-page proof in days. What it cannot do is decide, from a cold problem statement, that the forced route through Fefferman's options c and d is the one worth spending that compute on. That decision took Córdoba and Martínez-Zoroa years and Buckmaster and Alpöge a further year of slow going. It fit in a rumor.
The credit system pays for the proof. The compute now makes the proof cheap. The one thing left to pay for is the thing that leaked.
The two proposals Buckmaster says he was offered confirm it. Post Euler, and OpenAI posts Navier-Stokes the next day. Or write up OpenAI's Navier-Stokes result yourself, crediting the model, with Alpöge off the paper because he works at Anthropic. Either way the lab is buying the write-up and the calendar, and offering, as consolation, to call the two of them the closest humans to the problem. That phrase is the whole new economy in five words. Closest humans is what you are when the derivation belongs to a machine and the direction belongs to whoever heard about it first.
The fair objection: this is one side of a phone call, from the man who got scooped. Buckmaster concedes he has not seen the proof, does not know what the model did, and is not accusing anyone of anything. He used Codex and GPT-5.6 himself. If OpenAI's model closed the gap, he says it should be said loudly, with the history intact. Grant all of it. It does not touch the point. Nobody disputes the sequence: tip, prompt, proof, proposal, in that order, inside a week. Whether or not any user data was touched, the model was aimed by people who knew where to aim it, and the aiming was the year of work.
Buckmaster wanted to spend this week talking about a Deep Blue moment. He is spending it establishing who prompted what, and when. The route was the work. The write-up was slop. The proof took a month. The idea took years, and it fit in a rumor.
